Turning Life Around at Once or In Baby Steps

QIn response to the preamble to the new series on Islamic Paradigms that I had posted, a sister wrote:

“Its hard to turn your whole life around and throw everything you ever knew about life down the drain to concentrate on your religion the right way. I hope that one day I would be as spiritual as you but I need to take baby steps to get there.”

ABismillaahi walĥamdulillaahi waŝŝalaatu wassalaamu ‘alaa rasoolillaahi

I am glad that you have taken time to write. Let us note the following important points:

The standards that I am going to present in the next few articles on Islamic Paradigms are our desired standards and thus are our targets and goals. The intention of presenting them is to have a clear vision of where we want to be. The purpose is not to condemn where we are; rather it is to MOTIVATE all of us towards the excellence we should be striving for. The intent is to encourage everyone to strive for those standards, NOT to criticize anyone for not being there or discourage anyone because of the the enormity of the gap that may exist.

The fact to remember is that we are human beings, hence, imperfect. Being imperfect means that there is always room for improvement. Allaah SWT neither wanted us to be perfect, nor expected us to be. What He wants us to have is: A clear vision of the level of excellence human being should try to attain, a continuous struggle to improve ourselves towards that level, a steady progress towards that direction, and a determination to remain on the course of getting better all the time, without giving up on any failures or any lapses. In that sense, Islam is a religion of continuous improvements.

Allaah SWT appreciates our steps of continuous improvements, even if they are very small, as long as we continue to take steps in the right direction keeping our eyes set on the ideal goal. Those consistent, constant and continuous efforts are, in fact, loved by Allaah, regardless of how tiny those baby steps are!

I will let you reflect on these thoughts today. Inshaa Allaah, part 2 of the paradigm series will be posted tomorrow.
